One of Edinburgh’s inner city volcanoes started smoking again. We were headed to East Lothian yesterday afternoon for a wee swim when our eldest lad spotted this out of the side window, so we took a quick detour to grab some shots and video.
After a bracing dook I tried to catch a decent shot of the Housemartins as they ducked and dived above us. I’ll need to practice that a bit more.
.The sky was full of smoke as we approached the city and we could see fires still burning on the East and West sides of the elephant/lion haunches and round above the high road to the south.
You can see a police van parked on the road on the west side.
I think the fire brigade were trying to prevent the fire crossing below the high road. You can see the appliance bottom right squirting up into the lowest conflagration.
This one was very close to the action - doors flung open as they leapt out to face this break-out.
You can see how far the fire spread from this early image at 4.30pm to those close-ups above at 11pm which were of that road at the bottom of the frame. This view is over the top of Duddingston Loch, with AS summit out of sight behind the smoke.
These ones below were NOT from last night, but I found them in the passing and liked the view towards the Old Town.
All fires now seem to be completely out, and the rain will be a big help too. Thanks to the lads and lassies of the Scottish Fire & Rescue Service for all that you do. Respect.
Maybe see you out there.

Great stuff Tom! Those shots are some of the best I’ve seen of it. Shows just how well the firies did 👍
Superb images, of our darling hill,
brilliantly caught. Gutted.
