The 220,000 folk descending on Murrayfield Stadium the other week was a big event for Swifties, but our city is no stranger to grand gatherings. Aside from the craziness that is the Edinburgh Festival in August, there seems to be a constant flow of new and interesting things to feed our curiosity.
Capturing unusual and unique scenes in Edinburgh has become a bit of an obsession for me. It’s a challenge to find different perspectives of a city so comprehensively photographed by 4 million annual visitors and so many enthusiastic and talented local lens carriers. Bring lights, projections and dancers and I’ll meet you there with my camera.
Message From The Skies ran over a number of years from 2018 to 2022 and featured projections with words, music and sound at sites all across the city. Double Take Projections were the technical maestros behind it. This was a great way to get in a good walk on cold January evenings with thoughtful and compelling artworks by a wide range of creators.
Back in 2018 there was a very poignant remembrance of the end of World War One and a series of projections onto the Scottish Parliament building in Holyrood. The installation was called THEIR NAME LIVETH and was a partnership between The Scottish Parliament, the Scottish National War Memorial and The Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo. The names of all 134, 712 men and women who died during the conflict were projected onto the building, taking over 7 hours.
The Castle of Light event at Edinburgh Castle looks spectacular from viewpoints all over the city.
Edinburgh Castle has also been projected on from all sides. This was from the launch of the festival with a projection event called Deep Time…
…and in shallower times there have been less official projections borrowing the castle rock and walls.
One of my favourite events is the Meadows Festival. I caught it one year when it was sleeping in the haar and the Merry Go round was particularly spookified. You can almost hear the music faintly chiming.
I’m going to make this Part 1 and follow in a couple of days with Part 2 as I’ve only covered a fraction of the events I’d like to. I’ll leave you for now with this dragon from inside the Castle of Light event.
